the book is meticulously plotted. I underestimated baldacci's clockwork precision at using and tying up every element of his novel, so there's that. baldacci is also dialed in on class inequality and the ravages of poverty, which is a place I think more americans should be.

the prose needed more guidance from the editor, or a better editor lol, too many repetitive phrases, clauses, and bad habits crept in the work. felt like it was written for a deadline in a bad way.

the premise is sooo goofy despite trying to be ultra-grim and serious. it's a bit too exploitive for me. it's lacking something that would make it not feel like a playground of suffering.

It bothers me how closely John Puller tracks everything in and about Jack Reacher. His dialog. Killing prowess. His detective thought process,even down to his refusal to let us know the details of his “aha moments” until later. So, I gave it 3 stars. But, my real measuring stick is how fast was the read (I.e. was it difficult to put the book down? did the pace of the story draw me in? And using that criteria, the book rates 4.5 stars.
