What happened to the Princes in the Tower remains to this day a mystery of English history. The Princes were the two sons of King Edward IV of England, and the elder prince became king in April 1483. But six weeks later, the boys' uncle, Richard, proclaimed himself king and the Princes, who were living in the Tower of London, were never seen again. Richard's assumed role in the murder of the princes has colored popular views of Richard III to this day - he is widely portrayed as hunched in body and evil in mind.
