sebastian barry makes it far too easy to overlook his beautiful writing with one of the world’s most boring, dark, dusty stories. there were segments that had my jaw dropping, pen in hand highlighting every word. there were also moments when my attention was lost on a cast of forgettable characters and gross scenery. reluctantly remains one of my favourites from my ib literature course. beautifully poetic.

           Beautiful and visceral. An unflinching depiction of the horrors of both the wars with Native Americans and the Civil War, amidst which love and human altruism still bloom. At times, even laugh out loud funny. Plus, a narrator whom I will carry in my heart for a long time. 

Barry's grasp of the power of individual sentences is virtuosic. In long passages about the ferocity of slaughter in war or the dullness of mundane life, he would sneak in a sentence of poetic feeling that stopped me in my tracks. Yet I never doubted it all came from the mind of our narrator Thomas, a mostly uneducated man. It all magnifies Barry's larger exploration of the masculine and feminine. Our narrator is brave and a coward, duty bound and rebellious, and an indian killing life long soldier who feels most at home when dressed as an elegant lady.
