This is the only known work by the Roman poet and philosopher Titus Lucretius Carus (about 99 B.C. - about 55 B.C.). It expounds the tenets of Epicureanism, a philosophy which believe "pleasure" was best obtained by living modestly, seeking and gaining knowledge about the world, and limiting one's desires.

Can't in good conscience give it 5 stars for the reason I can't give most historical texts the full 5: inevitable sexism. This one is actually quite good for the most part, but it has its moments of "um?!"

So. Gorgeous poetry and philosophy. A reliable favourite. But still, a product of its time in the occasional uncomfortable moment.
