Boy, I think Denis is channeling Elmore Leonard! The characters were wandering around wondering what to do with themselves and Denis said "come on, I can put you to work". Or some sort of scenario like that. So if you've read all of Leonard and wish he had written more - then, nobody move! you've found your next crime novel about sad sack bad guys who think they are all that.

I originally was going to award this two stars but decided to bump it up to three. It's well-written and succeeds at what it's trying to be: a page-turning noir thriller. That type of novel just isn't for me and I didn't make any kind of substantive connection to it.
