Devil's Lair is the first book in the latest series from Anna Zaires. I have really neglected reading this author and can't believe that I didn't even know these books had been published. I haven't really read this author that much, not for any other reason other than it slipped my mind. There are so many books and with how massive the romance genre has become, it is easy for an author to slip through the cracks. But I have such a fondness for this author, she was one of the authors that truly introduced me to the "dark romance" genre and if I recall correctly she was my FIRST so I definitely have a soft spot for this author. She writes the type of dark romance that really works for me, it is borderline contemporary and dark and many times these books can blend and she always tosses in an ounce of suspense for greater measure. Not sure how long these reviews will be of these two connection books but we shall see. 



 Devil's Lair features some strong characters here:  



 
   Nikolai Molotov-Alpha male, member of a mafia family (it is unclear if they are true mafia but its my guess), single father, filthy rich, has a controlling possessive nature although highly protective of those he considers "family"  
 



 
   Chloe-degree in education, teacher, on the run from assassins, strong and sweet  
 



Devil's Lair is a story that is 1st POV, so we get this story from Chloe's perspective mostly. Although on occasion we do get the perspective from Nikolai just not as frequent. Chloe found her mother murdered and overheard the assassins and their plan for her, and when the local police department turned a blind eye to all of it, she knew she had no choice but to go on the run and do anything she could to survive. She has no clue why they are after her, only knowing they want her dead. Every time she thinks she has found a safe place, she gets found and far too quickly and she has no idea how they are tracking her so quickly. But up in the west in the mountains, she stumbles across a ad offering a job in search of a teacher for a four year old boy. And with it being so remote and she out of money, she needs a job desperately or she won't survive much longer. But when she meets her future employer and the father of this boy, she knows that she is in trouble, because he is dangerous and there is a connection between them. A connection she doesn't know if it will bring joy or heartache. But as she tries to bond with his son, and maneuver her way around this strong Russian man that wants her, she will have to face up to the truth of who he is and if she is willing to live with the man he is and accept him fully 



Devil's Lair is quite an interesting tale and it is a story that will pull you in so quickly. I know that there are many mixed reviews on this one, and I will be honest this book duo will only work for certain readers. The one element that I feel is essential is that these books are ones you must love a good possessive alpha male, because that is what Nikolai is, and if you can't do alpha males, I highly recommend you don't pick this one up here. It would be a disaster if you did. And you probably wouldn't enjoy it that much. However, if you like the type of males that this author writes, I have a feeling you will really enjoy these books. I really loved the instant love connection between these two and I was on the edge of my seat all the way through. I had a blast with both characters and I really connected with Chloe. I loved how relatable she is as a character and the way she was written just worked for me in every way. There is a bond that she forms with Nikolai's son, and it was so adorable. To see this little boy just come out of his shell with Chloe, he really responded to her. She brings such light to the mansion and really loved seeing her bantering with Nikolai, even though she fears him sometimes, she is drawn to him but also stands her ground when she needs to and I just loved that. 



Overall I found myself in love with this beginning of Nikolai and Chloe's story and it was such a journey to see them together and see what they make of each other here. It was so fun to see it all come together.

meh, this one was just underwhelming to say the least.

if there's one thing i cared about or was interested in while reading this book was the molotov family and their backstories. i didn't particularly feel the chemistry nor the love nikolai and chloe were supposed to have for each other, and if i'm being honest, i didn't really care about them individually either. their scenes with slava were cute, but that's about it when it comes to them as protagonists. hopefully the author will write more books focused on the rest of the molotov family cause that was the only mildly interesting aspect to this story.
