Difficult Loves is a beautiful book of impressionistic glances at the inner lives of ordinary people. It's the most realistic of Calvino's books that I've read -- for its simple, unambitious depictions of the world and its crystal-clear images that ring true -- and his most empathic, too, with an uncanny grasp of human emotion. If the metaphysical imaginings of Invisible Cities or the postmodern puzzle that is If on a winter's night a traveler... have turned you off, give this book a try and Calvino might surprise you.

So beautifully written but I didn’t feel attached to it at all
