Diving Into the Wreck

I bought this book years ago after reading the titular poem, which floored me. Unfortunately, it’s just absurdly better than the rest of the collection.

I lost most interest at the epigraph for Part III, which quotes “Leonard Cohen’s ‘Bird on a Wire’ (as sung by Judy Collins).” ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Only one of these artists lands in every thrift store bargain bin… just sayin’.

I do love Adrienne Rich but when I read poetry, I want it to be, ya know, what Joyce said: near to the wild heart of life. Most of these poems deal with emotionally and politically fraught subjects. Even so, I didn’t feel compelled, didn’t feel a sense of urgency or rawness.

Overall it’s in the good, but not great category for me. But thanks for the Master Doc, girl (iykyk).
