i went into this one blind and what a fucked up book this ended up being. in a way this reminded me a lot of the mindf*ck series which i've recently binged, but with a major difference. i think the heroine in this story is more than just a morally grey character like lana was in mindf*ck, in the sense that i don't know up to which point her quest for revenge is founded on rational arguments.

i was really rooting for nina and pike's revenge plot especially after we get all the flashbacks to the nightmare that was their life in the foster system, but it all went to hell with the revelation towards the end of the book about why the heroine wants to get revenge on her husband and pike's actions against nina. that reveal didn't sit well with me at all. the fact that she held a grudge against someone who wasn't involved in any way to the abuse she ended up suffering after being put in the foster system was enough for me to not be able to connect with her in the least. why? because she's literally blaming someone who was a KID when he called the cops on the heroine's father and for a good reason too. so no, the whole premise of this book falls flat once that crucial piece of information gets revealed, because the guy had nothing to do with what happened to her, so her plotting her husband's murder makes the heroine an unhinged and irrational protagonist whom i can't get behind with, regardless of all the awful things she had to go through as a kid.

i liked the romance that developed between nina and declan and i think that she grew as a character towards the end of the book, which was evident in the decisions that she made regarding her quest for revenge. the sex scenes were quite something as well, with a mix of BDSM thrown in there. overall, it was an interesting and sad story that ended on a cliffhanger which makes me wanna pick up the next one asap.
