A somewhat rambling read about L'Amour's self-education and compulsive reading. He's a fascinating story-teller, and the bibliography alone is worth reading the entire book.

How does L'Amour apply to us today?

OK. Besides that wonderful characters and settings, history and culture in his books. I love his writing style: clear yet expressive. If you think of extremes with Hemingway on one end, Dickens on the other, L'Amour is just right with scenes and characters feel fully fleshed out yet no wasted words.

An early literary critic on first reviewing L'Amours work, said: "He has all the ingredients that make a successful Writer: a love of words, industriousness, and something to write about — he lived his work."

If you have read L'Amour's westerns, I highly recommend this autobiography.
