I liked this book. The writing was simple, but sometimes Danticat would hit you with these sentences that were just the most poetically brilliant thing I have read in a while. I think I would've enjoyed the memoir a lot more if I read it in short sections, yet my procrastination definitely didn't permit that, because it was obviously a memoir so it was a lot of stories and then reflections on said stories.

This book simultaneously made be proud and ashamed to be an American. Proud because of the wonderful people who are American. Ashamed because of how America treats people who are in desperate need to come here when their lives are threatened. With the current refuge crisis from Syria, it is a reminder that these issues are current and not in the past. 

This book made me become attached to the people described. The injustices they endured are difficult to read without being effected. Thank you Edwidge Danticat for sharing your family's story.

I really liked the memoir aspect of this book. Memoirs are quickly becoming one of my favorite genres. The memoir genre combined with Danticat's master story-telling ability created a narrative from which I could not look away. Somehow though, her works are nowhere near my favorite. I tend to be a fairly linear, chronological person and that makes Danticat's typical non-traditional thinking about chronology in her books a bit off-putting. I also find myself a bit depressed every time I read or finish reading one of her works which unfortunately means that I will likely not read one of her works again. I do think she's a fantastically brilliant author though, just not my type.

I've read Danticat before, her collection of short stories in Krik? Krak! was my introduction to her work and last year I finally read her excellent book The Farming of Bones. Brother I am Dying is my first non-fiction by Danticat, the memoir about the lives of and her relationship with her Uncle who raised her for many years, and her father is moving, touching and heartbreaking.
