The first in the series remains my favorite of the series, although Tomb of the Golden Bird is quite good.

I have read all the Amelia Peabody mysteries and I love them dearly. This is the series that really got me hooked on mysteries.

           Was expecting more. But the mystery element did not work for me. It made sense, but by the halfway point I was more focused on finishing the book than caring abt the mystery.
 THE BOOK SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHORTER!!! 
 this book dragged for me. Look, I don't care if yr book is long if it is captivating and the information leads to something and plays a role in the story. CHUCK THAT AT ME. However, this book should have been cut. The romance? lacklustre. I was confusing him and his brother with each other. Also, I was more interested in her friend's romance than hers.
I don't rmb anything abt the mystery. Why did she go to Egypt in the first place? idk. the walking mummy thing. Confusion. How did they find out it was Albert? idk either.

I liked it overall, could have really done without the racism portrayed. I know this is historic and I do like how some of the issues with archeology and digging up tombs was brought up, but it felt like it was there so briefly compared to the rest of the plot.

Overall a decent read, but if this racism permeates the rest of the series I'll pass. It was written in the 70s, not the 3os, I don't think the offhand comments were central to the plot.

Fun cozy mystery set in late 1800's Egypt. Characters and setting (EGYPT! ARCHAEOLOGY!) are definitely the stars, as the mystery itself wasn't too mysterious in this first book.
