A photo of this book should accompany the definition of deus ex machina in the dictionary. I really liked this, and read it in one go because I got to a point where it gets creepy and menacing and there was no chance I was gonna be able to fall asleep unless I finished the book. Not as brain-meltingly amazing as The Forever War, but worth reading.

After living as part of a group consciousness on the planet Middle Finger for decades, Mandella and other well-heeled humans grow tired of their safe existence, steal a starship, and head for Earth in search of adventure.
