This was a cute, quick read. A mother leaves her family for a few days, giving the father a list of things to remember, including buying milk. The next day's breakfast comes up short for the children as there is no milk. The father says he will go and buy some. He is gone for a long time and comes home with an incredible story for why it took him so long which includes aliens, time travel and vampires. He describes in vivid detail the struggles he overcame to come home with the milk safely.

This is an absolutely lovely and entertaining book for all ages. It also struck me as a Gaiman-esque tribute to Roald Dahl (it has the sort of fantastical feel Dahl stories have). Neil Gaiman's story is funny and very sweet, but the real stand-out is the illustrations by Skottie Young (they are amazing). Gaiman's story is about a father's "wibbly wobbly timey-wimey tall-tale" about his quest to get milk so his children can have cereal for breakfast. And fortunately, milk is a bit part of the plot.

The first time I read FORTUNATELY, THE MILK, I was on a road trip with my sister's family. Her kids (9-year-old twin girls, 5-year-old boy) were antsy and bored, and begged to be read to. I had a new book on my Kindle that I thought they might enjoy, though I myself had not read it yet.

I read this book aloud to a carful of people who all ended up listening, whether they'd intended to or not. By the end, everyone was laughing--me, the kids, the kids' parents, and our cousin who had come along for the trip.

As soon as I finished the final words, the kids begged for it to be read again.

So that's how I wound up reading a book aloud, twice in a row, on a car trip, and having more fun than should probably be legal.

FORTUNATELY, THE MILK is fun, light-hearted, full of absurd British humor, and deeply sweet--all about a father's love for his children (and flair for creative storytelling). Read it. I don't care if you're grown. Read it anyway.

Neil Gaiman does it again! This book is funny and imaginative. I loved the illustrations and the dad was hilarious. I would definitely recommend for parents and kids to read this one aloud!

I received this book today and I finished it in half an hour. I had a smile on my face the whole time. What a lovely book! 

I didn't really know what it was about, I bought it because Neil Gaiman wrote it and I'm a loyal fan, but I honestly adored the story. It's so fun and fast and funny, I smiled and smiled and I might read it again tomorrow. That's how much I liked it.

This book was just so funny, timey wimey and delightful! I loved it. What more could you want in a children's book: time travel, dinosaurs, ponies, wumpires, and fortunately, the milk. And it's actually the first Gaiman book I've read instead of listening to after getting a copy at BEA.

Great illustrations by Skottie Young, too! They really capture the excitement of the story.

This was such a delightful story! It's funny the crazy events that can take place when a dad goes to the store alone to get milk for breakfast cereal! I can't say too much because it isn't long, and I don't want to spoil anything. It is full of colorful characters, crazy places, and fortunately, the milk! This book is whimsical and fun. I suspect it would make a good bedtime story for children.

This is the first book I read by Neil Gaiman and I loved it so much! It’s so fun and great to read aloud and I finished it within an hour. I referenced this book in an essay for VCFA, which was fun to write. I love how this book is one part Doctor Who, one part The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and one part The Usual Suspects! It really fits with all the elements at play in the book. The overall story is cute and lighthearted, perfect for a bedtime story with children, or those who are a child-at-heart. I recommend this book to everyone!

I just finished reading this to my five year old sister, and while it may have been a bit advanced for her (she got confused at all the time travel), and even though my voice hurts ridiculously much because I read it all out loud, this was one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read, and I might even have to buy myself a copy.

I love Neil Gaiman’s style so much, this book reminded me of the wit and joy of children’s books I used to read back in the day.
All the whacky adjectives and literal statements made me giggle especially the line “....he had his tail between - well not actually between his legs because Stegosaurus’ aren’t built that way....”, which had me choke on my water. 
Silly and sweet I think we all should jump back to children books as adults.
