I almost put this book down after the first section narrated by Sierra. Then I got to the first section from Mary Katheryn McMurray's journal. This portion of the narrative kept me reading. The modern day portion? Rivers sank to using tired, predictable clichés with rather unlikeable characters. Sierra never seemed to show real growth even though Rivers presented her problem practically on the first page. Rivers also did a rather incomplete job of weaving the sections of the journal into the overall narrative. Until Sierra openly states that she read the journal-and that she read it multiple times-the narrative lacks indication that she even bothers to read. Thus, the reader feels like she is reading two separate narratives, tied together only by the fact that these two women are distantly related.

This book did not survive round two of the purge from my personal collection.
