🙃 this book put me in an existential crisis 🙃 I have too many thoughts about this book to articulate at 2 am but I’ll try. First of all, this might be my new favorite book ever. Second, it made me cry. I'm not a gamer, but this book made me appreciate how games are more like interactive stories. There are characters, choices, and a plot that can be even more diverting than a book. Although I had never played adventure games, each one in the story was so unique that it made me want to read on, figure out how to pass the level, and understand the message behind it. As the book spans thirty years, it made me reflect on how people's lives can intersect at different points, and that while nothing stays the same forever, it doesn't mean that the impression can't last a lifetime. It made me think about death, and how we have so many choices but only the ones we make end up counting in this life. Anyway, I loved it so much. I may even listen to it as an audiobook, just to hear every beautiful word again. Also, it's always a pleasant surprise when there are Asian main characters, I can't really explain why, perhaps because it's barely glanced over, it's not made to be anything special, really, it just is. Some of my favorite quotes: "It isn't a sadness, but a joy, that we don't do the same things for the length of our lives." "She had thought she arrived. But life was always arriving. There was always another gate to pass through." "The way to turn an ex-lover into a friend is to never stop loving them, to know that when one phase of a relationship ends it can transform into something else. Was this about gaming? Yes. But it also touched on the human condition and I think that that’s where it hit me the deepest. It’s def a book I’m glad I picked up and read even if it’s one I’ll never pick up again.

I didn’t like it as much after the climax event but it was still really good. The first 80% of the book is 5 stars. After that, meh, 4ish stars. It did make me think about video games differently so I always rate things favorably when they make me think.

It didn't really move me like I know it did for a lot of people. There was nice chemistry between Sadie and Sam, but I wasn't personally a fan of the video game-focused narrative.

I wonder if this is how some people view the movie Everything Everywhere all at Once, how it feels like it's pretending to be more than it actually is (for the record, I love that movie).

i wanted to like the nerd-core premise and thought i was getting into a video game version of The Social Network, but it came off as a gimicky pastiche. felt that the climax was not necessary or deserved and i only found 1 character likeable!

as calvin said the last 100 pages will never make up for the crimes committed by the first 300 but on a positive note. the unresolved friendship yearning is awesome even though the characters have to be at peak idiocy levels for it to pan out that way. don't really understand how the author is a harvard graduate. literally so much tell and 0 show..  psa that only works if you're rainbow rowell. the writing is so so bad and the author doesnt trust you enough to let you come to a single conclusion on your own. so you have handholdy explanations of everyone's thoughts and feelings (in the third person omniscient btw) but also the mansplaining of misogyny and feeling neglected and missing people. would be perfect for a 5th grader if not for the sex. don't even get me started on the sex. everytime somebody has sex or mentions sex it's so jarring and awful and useless to the plot (for the most part). like why is the bdsm even in here. could've given this 0 stars but that emily chapter really turned it around. also why is the korean japanese guy named marx.

. Ultimately, it reminds me that at the end of the day, I can always restart and seek a winning path with an infinite lives.

I love this book so much! If you’re looking for something heartwarming and about love but not specifically a romance between two characters, this is perfect! Makes you think about how to appreciate the relationships you have with close family and friends. While this is mainly about games programming and design, you do not need prior knowledge or any interest of gaming in general, as the plot is so much more than love for games.

not sure how i feel about this book. i’m surprised more reviews don’t mention the predatory relationship that’s depicted early on—nothing inherently wrong with portraying that, obviously, but i feel like this is as much a story about surviving abuse and violence as much as it is about friendship and forgiveness, which is the part everyone emphasizes

honestly this really depressed me (this interpretation might also be because i’m writing this at 3 am, lol). i feel like where this lands is that life is unfair to marxes who deserve better, and that sams & sadies get to grow off of them 💀 

overall these are complaints about the fact that the story makes me feel (bad), which i guess should be counted as a good thing. i was entertained by this book, even though i often didn’t quite enjoy it, and i was always curious enough about what would happen next. but yeah i found this very sad
