I see what the author was trying to accomplish with this book but I feel like it never really got to me.

The French setting, the suspence, the plot that thickens… are all aspects that were indeed present, but not to the right extent.

I feel like that for a book with a project as ambitious as this one, at least 150 pages more were definitely needed.

How do you take a fairly standard crime story and make it something new? 

In this novel, we follow the events that unfold around Tony - a strangely likeable if flawed man. From his affair to the murder of his lovers husband, we are taken through the events that unfold through his puzzled eyes. It's a wonderful piece of writing, and whilst Tony remains the central character and we are taken through his reasoning and world view in detail, the rest of the characters are equally alive.

A wonderful example of a simple story, cleverly told.
