I've been vaguely familiar with the story of Gilgamesh for some time, but I had never actually read the story. This edition calls itself a "version" rather than a translation, which suggests that the author took a few more liberties than a straight-up translator would have taken. If so, he did so to good effect. It was easy to read, and it felt like a contemporary telling of an ancient tale (by which I mean one that's palatable to a contemporary ear, not one that updates events and characters to seem contemporary). This one was a real pleasure.

Dejando de lado tanto la extensa introducción como las notas al final del libro, esta "version" de Gilgamesh me parece extraordinaria, la primera historia escrita que se tiene nocion, una epopeya que hasta el día de hoy, creo yo, mantiene una magnificencia única. En la propia lectura no sólo se ve como las tradiciones judeo-cristianas han tomado de Gilgamesh conceptos básicos (desde el fruto prohibido hasta Noé), tambien vemos a un héroe que sólo cuando conoce a su igual se siente humano y como por su arrogancia destruye lo que más ama y se ve enfrentado a lo que todos temen, la muerte.
