I bought this solely because it was written by Suzanne Collins, and I haven’t read other books from her apart from the Hunger Games trilogy. Also, it was on sale. I didn’t have any expectations regarding this book, especially since its target audience is children, so I can’t really expect it to have complex concepts. But I’m happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised and I ended up enjoying this book in a way that I never thought I would. I’m actually kinda bummed that I didn’t buy the other books from this series, because now I actually want to continue on with Gregor’s story.

Such a cute Middle Grade Urban Fantasy. This was a quick read. I had a bit of Mrs Frisby & the Rats of Nimh and The Littles viibes while reading. Having read the Hunger Games though first, and seeing where Suzanne Collins writing goes, I thought it was just ok. I do think I would like to continue the series and have my kids read it with me too. There were some really sweet moments between Gregor and his little sister Boots. I also really enjoyed Gregor’s character overall.

I've been meaning to read this for a while - ever since it landed on my pile of unread library books despite the street cred of Suzanne Collins amongst my upper primary students. A few students ventured to read it and gave it some good reviews. 
It's a most interesting fantasy adventure involving a city under NY, rats, cockroaches, spiders and 'underlanders' 
Gregor is a sympathetic hero and his young sister Boots will steal your heart. Good for strong readers 10+

This book was great fun, and surprisingly engaging. Unwitting hero, grand quest to save a world, points of sorrow, points of humor. It's all there. I'm definitely looking forward to the next in this series.

Just a mini review of this one, since I read it out of the blue and also I just want to jot down some notes. This book was the SWEETEST Fantasy that I've read in a long time. I have no doubt in my mind that teenage Jessica would have loved this to the moon and back (she also loved Redwall for the same reason), because it's just so fun. Oh sure, it's dark too. There is war, and death, like every good Fantasy should have. Suzanne Collins writes this in a way that is accessible by middle graders and young adults alike though and, if I prove anything, even 34 year old women who needed something kind to her soul to start off the year. I had a blast listening to this on audio, and I think I'm going to binge the rest of these this year.
