Un couple de retraités parisiens vit au Havre, avec ses deux fils. Le cadet, Jean, est blond et sage ; Pierre, l'aîné, noir et emporté. Leur vie s'écoule paisible, agrémentée de parties de pêche en mer ou sur la plage quand un grain éclate. Le ciel s'obscurcit. Les vents se déchaînent, chassant le bonheur. En mourant, un vieil ami de la famille laisse à Jean sa fortune. Pourquoi à Jean seulement ? Pierre y pense nuit et jour. Il plonge dans le passé de sa mère, à la recherche du secret empoisonné. L'émotion intense, l'histoire cruelle et vraie, les odeurs de la mer, la lumière célèbre de l'embouchure de la Seine font de ce roman un des chefs-d'œuvre de Maupassant.

Un roman classique qui nous raconte l'histoire de deux frères d'une bonne famille du Havre dont leur vie va être chamboulé par l'annonce d'un héritage d'un vieil ami de la famille. Nous sommes vraiment plongés dans cette famille et surtout entre ses deux frères que tout oppose et la jalousie qu'il peut s'immiscer facilement entre eux. 
Cette histoire est criante de vérité malgré l'époque où elle se déroule. On n'est au cœur des sentiments des personnages qui sont troublés par cet héritage. La souffrance tout comme la joie est exprimée avec une extrême justesse. Je crois que cette histoire m'aura totalement bouleversé, j'ai tout aimé et j'ai été embarquée par cette plume dès les premiers mots. Maupassant nous fait voir le poids des ressentiments et des secrets de famille avec brio. Je me suis retenue de verser quelques larmes mais elles etaient bien présentes dans mon coeur. J'ai tout de suite envie de me replonger dans cet œuvre pour essayer de comprendre encore et encore Pierre surtout qui m'a fendu le cœur. Je trouve que ce court roman est bien mal connu et c'est dommage, il ne le mérite pas. J'ai aussi beaucoup aimé la préface de Maupassant qui est un court essai suir ce qu'est le roman et la critique. Je l'ai trouvé tout à fait pertinent et instructif sur le point de vue de Maupassant.

I invite ladies because I like to be with them, and then, as soon as I feel the water beneath me, I think of nothing but the fish." Mme. Roland was now quite awake, and gazing with a softened look at the wide horizon of cliff and sea. "You have had good sport, all the same," she murmured. But her husband shook his head in denial, though at the same time he glanced complacently at the basket where the fish caught by the three men were still breathing spasmodically, with a low rustle of clammy scales and struggling fins, and dull, ineffectual efforts, gasping in the fatal air. Old Roland took the basket between his knees and tilted it up, making the silver heap of creatures slide to the edge that he might see those lying at the bottom, and their death-throes became more convulsive, while the strong smell of their bodies, a wholesome reek of brine, came up from the full depths of the creel.
