This is a full account of the development of the Portuguese nation, from pre-Roman Lusitania to the republic under Salazar, ending with the loss of Goa to India in1962. The author's interpretation is mainly political rather than a social or economic, paying special attention to the events of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
