I rly thought there was no way this could top Silence of the Lambs but Thomas Harris really got me together. Decadent. Disturbing. Macabre. Romantic. Artfully fucked. Truly one of my new favorites.

Well don t get me wrong but although i was truly fascinated by Res Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal just didn t work for me. The descriptions of Italy are fascinated but i got tired of them. i didn t 'connect' with the characters and i felt that they are being mistreated in their own story. Dr. Lecter is great in this book and yes he is the smartest criminal but i didn t enjoyed the fact that we now know almost everything about him why he does what he does and how he thinks. The mystery that surrounded him before has now dissapeared. 
Im really sad about me not liking the book i really wanted to like it. Nevertheless, i would totally recommend it as a good read 😊

Sepertinya aku menaruh ekspektasi yang terlalu tinggi terhadap buku ini karena aku tahu Hannibal Lecter akhirnya akan menjadi pusat dari ceritanya. Dua buku pertama dari seri Hannibal Lecter lebih fokus terhadap misteri pembunuhan berantai yang dilakukan oleh orang lain sementara Hannibal Lecter ditahan. Dan di buku ketiga ini, aku sangat berharap dapat melihat lebih banyak aksi Hannibal Lecter—karena meskipun kedengaran aneh, aku selalu mendukung Hannibal dan ingin ia menang pada akhirnya. Akan tetapi entah mengapa buku yang panjang ini terasa berjalan lambat dan tidak menyuguhkan apa yang aku harapkan. Meskipun demikian, buku ini memiliki momen-momen yang berhasil membuatku menganga lebar saat membacanya.

Sebelum aku mulai membahas lebih lanjut tentang buku ini, perlu aku tekankan bahwa aku membaca versi terjemahannya. Dan terkadang terjemahan bisa mengubah banyak hal dari teks aslinya, termasuk kenikmatan membaca. Aku mungkin akan membahas tentang topik terjemahan ini dalam post yang lain :) Salah satu hal yang cukup mengecewakan untukku dari buku ini adalah alurnya yang terasa lambat, dan juga perkembangan cerita yang berjalan sedikit demi sedikit. Aku rasa alur yang lambat ini mungkin disebabkan oleh banyaknya karakter yang menjadi fokus ceritanya, seperti Mason Verger, Rinaldo Pazzi, Paul Krendler, dan sejumlah orang lain yang memburu Hannibal Lecter. Namun tentu saja, di antara alur yang lambat itu masih terdapat saat-saat menegangkan yang membuatku kembali semangat membaca. Sebagian besar adalah saat pengungkapan hal-hal yang tidak terduga olehku, dan juga tentunya saat Dr. Hannibal Lecter beraksi. Meskipun ada beberapa saat ketika aku merasa bosan sewaktu membaca buku ini, aku tetap meneruskannya hingga selesai karena penasaran dengan ending ceritanya. Ending buku ini sama sekali di luar dugaanku (dan jujur saja aku sama sekali tidak bisa menebak kemana arah ceritanya), dan aku sama sekali tidak tahu harus berkomentar seperti apa... Karena aku sendiri speechless sewaktu membaca akhir ceritanya. Dan walaupun aku merasa kecewa dengan beberapa aspek buku ini, aku masih penasaran dengan buku terakhir seri ini, Hannibal Rising, yang menceritakan tentang masa lalu Hannibal. Karena satu-satunya faktor yang tidak mengecewakanku dari buku ini adalah karakter Dr. Hannibal Lecter....
"Sejak jawaban sebagian terhadap doanya itu, Hannibal Lecter tidak terganggu lagi oleh pemikiran-pemikiran tentang belas kasihan atau apa pun. Nuraninya seakan sudah mati."

WHAT!!!! What just happened?? 

I was extremely excited to read this one after reading The Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs. After seeing Hannibal being so captivating in the previous books - despite being imprisoned, and not being the narrator or the protagonist, - I was so thrilled to see a book with him as the main character. 
Well....
I was wrong and extremely disappointed!! After the first half I just wanted the book to end, but the ending... the ending just !!! *frustrated noises*.
The ending was exactly opposite of who Hannibal and Clarice were in the previous books. It's like their core qualities itself (the same things that made them captivating, interesting or in case of Clarice, very likable) changed in the last 100 pages of the book! 
Despite reading gruesome details about a Cannibal, it's somehow the ending of this book which had nothing to do with killing or eating people, that made me think "Ewww, grrroossss"

           Something I learned again: don't expect that the movie and the book are the same. 
The first two movies are very similar to the books, so I thought this wouldn't be different as well. I was soo wrong. 

After I finished it, I really didn't know what to think about it. 
I mean, it was intriguing, there was a lot of suspense, the storyline was very good. But then that ending. To me, it seemed that the last few chapters didn't fit in. But when you think of it, I kind of like it. 

I like Hannibal Lecter so much. He is the kindest, most charming, most romantic psychopath you'll ever meet. 
I think the way the readers, or I, see Hannibal, is also the way Clarice sees Hannibal. And I think that explains the ending. He was one of the only guys who actually respected Clarice and saw her for who she really was; a beautiful, smart woman who knows what she wants and who respects herself and always stands up for herself. She is a character with a lot of depth, just like Hannibal, and that's why they ended up together.
