The stories are very inconsistent in my opinion. Some, like the first and the last (Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage and The Bear Came over the Mountain) were outstanding. But others, the meaning was just plain murky and the characters were never clearly visible to me.

The last story was actually expanded and became the basis of the movie starring Julie Christie: Away from Her. The story deals with the effects Alzheimer's disease has on both the victim and the family.
