One of the things I want to do this year is tackle the backlists of some authors I've read and enjoyed recently. I started with a Brazen book, because really, you just can't go wrong with them. I'm glad I did, too. I might be kicking myself for waiting so long to read this book, but I'm glad I read it when I did.

I enjoyed this book so very much. I love books about military men. I'm a sucker for the "best friend's little sister" trope. I love a strong female lead. And I'm a sucker for unexpected emotional responses while reading. Her Forbidden Hero had all of these things.

Her Forbidden Hero is the story of Alyssa and Marco. They've known each other for years. Alyssa's big brother, Brady, is Marco's best friend. They served in the military together. Now Marco's home and he and Alyssa are working together. She's always had feelings for him. He always considered her a little sister, but things are starting to change now. She's not the little girl he remembers. She's grown into a strong, determined woman who wants to make her own way in the world.

I loved Alyssa. She's the kind of strong female heroine I love in books. She was independent and thoughtful. I enjoyed how protective she was of Marco, how she put his needs above her own once she realized he was suffering from nightmares as a result of his PTSD. It takes a special kind of woman to be there for a friend, especially when she obviously doesn't want anything in return. Her biggest concern was his well-being. She truly was selfless. Marco was a tough nut to crack, but I knew Alyssa was just the woman to do it. Her actions weren't overt or calculating, but just her being around and the connection between them was enough to start chipping away his walls.

The characters in this book were complex wonderful. It was obvious how much they cared about each other, even when times got tough. Their road was definitely bumpy, but I enjoyed being on it with them. There was just the perfect amount of angst. There were also tons of feels and a heartwarming connection between characters you can't help but root for. And, being a Brazen, it had a few steamy moments, too.

This was a fantastic contemporary romance. Now, excuse me while I go devour the second book in this series, One Night with a Hero.
