I'm just putting this here so I can come back after the series is finished and see whether my hunch is correct: given the last interaction between Squall and Mog, it seems that perhaps he is not quite the villain he is being made out to be. Also, are the other Wundersmiths perhaps... not dead? Is he in some way protecting Nevermoor, etc.?

Literally one of the most satisfying and emotional series I’ve ever read. Each book keeps getting better and better. Cannot recommend this series enough!

5 stars, per usual. The Nevermoor series delivers only the best. This is probably the only series I enjoy that is mainly about characters younger than myself, with no romance that I absolutely love. Why are you still here? Go order the book.

Hollowpox, the third installment in Jessica Townsend’s Nevermoor series, was just as strong an entry into the series as the book preceding it. The world Townsend has built in the city of Nevermoor is absolutely delightful. It is enchanting and magical but by no means safe, and I love that dichotomy. The characters populating the series are just as captivating, and I’m including the antagonists in that description. Morrigan is a very easy protagonist to root for; she’s quirky and lovable and flawed and filled bursting with good intentions. Townsend has created something truly special in this series.

The eponymous Hollowpox is a freakish, unexplained and unpredictable plague ravaging the Wunimal population of Nevermoor. The Wunimals are sentient, often incredibly talented animals with varying degrees of more humanoid characteristics. I love the idea of them, and am sure that they also charm and enchant the younger audience for whom they are intended. So when these Wunimals began falling prey to Hollowpox, I was just as concerned as Morrigan and Jupiter and the gang, and just as desperate for answers and a cure. Townsend did a wonderful job of getting me quickly invested in the plot. She also did a fabulous job of using this plague that targeted only the Wunimals to set them at odds with the human population and instill fear and prejudice and a lack of empathy within part of her fictional population. This mirrored the bigotry of the Red Scare and other such real-life issues in interesting ways and would make for a great jumping off point to discuss such ignorant, biased paranoia and suspicion with any child in your life who decided to read these books. I found it very thought provoking, though I have to confess that there were times when I got a tiny bit bogged down in the political machinations of it all, which is the sole reason this book wasn’t a solid 5 star read for me.

I loved watching Morrigan get more education in her field, but sometimes I wanted to shake her. She became so consumed by her access to new knowledge that she forgot about the wonderful group of friends and found family she had accumulated. As someone whose first decade or more of existence were marked by an utter lack of love and affection being shown towards her, you would think that it would take longer for Morrigan to begin taking such loving relationships for granted. But, of course, she grows and changes over the course of the narrative, and having that type of failing gave her something from which to learn. But the education portion of her story was truly fascinating. The ways in which she was finally able to learn more about this power at the core of herself was wonderful, and I’m eager for more on that front.

The supporting cast of the series is so wonderful. I have come to truly adore Jupiter. He is more than Morrigan’s patron in the Wondrous Society; he is the father figure she deserves. His love for her and Jack and the other important beings in his life is palpable. He’s not without failings, but he just reminded me so much of The Doctor from Doctor Who, specifically a mix of Tennant and Smith, that I can’t help but adore everything about him. I also love Fenestra, the giant, snarky Magnifcat who is Jupiter’s right hand. I love everyone working at the Hotel Deucalion almost as much as I love the Deucalion itself; the hotel is a character in its own right, with tons of personality. I also love Unit 919 and Miss Cheery and the school experience that 919 is sharing. I’m even fascinated by the aforementioned antagonist, who shall remain as nameless as Morrigan’s gift in any of my reviews of the series. But I’m so entranced by the character, and hopeful that we’ll get more of them in the fourth installment.

Hollowpox is a fantastic middle-grade fantasy that I know for a fact is just as much fun for adults as it is for its intended audience. This entire series is a treasure, and is so far incredibly solid across every installment. I’ll be eagerly awaiting the publication of the fourth book, Silverborn, in October, and every other book Townsend blesses us with, both in this series and in anything else she puts to page.

Outstanding instalment in the series with two totally intriguing and, occasionally, dark developments.

First, fledgling Wundersmith Morrigan Crow is guided into a Wunsoc netherworld where a secretive Wundersmith archival educational team helps her meet and learn from past Wundersmiths, including the evil Ezra Squall as a boy along with other almost mythological Wundersmiths, using a magical pensieve-esque, immersive experience similar to the Harry Potter books. 

Second, Wunimals, animals with magical, almost human capabilities, are being infected with something called the Hollowpox, a disease that terrorizes Nevermoor and turns sentient wunimals into raging, murderous wild animals first, then into hollow shells, with the loss of their memories, language, education, and any recognition of their past lives as teachers, fashion designers, politicians and full members of Nevermoor's Free State society. Eerily prescient storyline given the global pandemic, and explores how those who are infected are marginalized and blamed for the havoc a viral outbreak causes in any society. 

Through it all, the spector of Wundersmith Ezra Squall, traveling using his consciousness on the Gossamer line to visit Nevermoor while his body stays in exile in the totalitarian realm of Wintersea, continues to pursue Morrigan. He deviously insinuates his goals and plans into Morrigan's life and haunts her desperate hunt for the cure for the Hollowpox as it has taken the mind and body of her beloved Wunimal mentor, Sofia, a foxwun who has been helping her learn about her Wundersmith heritage, legacy, and potential. Squall wants Morrigan to be his apprentice, and as he hovers over Morrigan's life at the Hotel Deucalion and Wunsoc, she begins to more fully comprehend how much she could learn from Sqall about calling, channeling, and controlling the Wunder coursing through in her life. The more Morrigan learns about Wunder, the more she wants to know. And Squall has always argued that he is the only one who can teach her.

Highly recommended for ages 10+, who will really need to read the series in order to enjoy the character development and world building. Can't wait to see where this series goes next, although I have my suspicions...

This book had me smiling from the first page. I was so happy to be back in this world with the characters that we know and love and keep unravelling pieces and learning about the Wundrous Society and Nevermoor. Pure serotonin.

The books keep getting funnier and funnier, and they feel incredibly cozy while exploring at the same time themes which are very much relevant to our nowadays global situation (in this novel there is a virus spreading around a specific sector of the population.. it rings a bell?). As well, the author tackles topics such as bigotry and abuse of power flawlessly. 

Nevermoor has easily become my favourite middle-grade series. Everyone should read it.

Probably closer to a 4.5, I loved diving back into the world and story of Mog and all her friends. It was interesting and of course action packed. I just don't know why but I didn't find myself as invested in this one as the first 2. 

However, THAT ENDING!!!!! I need book 4 immediately.

Another fantastic book in this series. I honestly enjoy these books so much, they’re funny and dramatic and twisty and utterly filled with magic and intrigue.
All of the characters are so interesting, flawed, sarcastic, and unique. I love Morrigan, especially, and how she’s growing, learning, and standing up for herself. All of the characters in this, even the background characters feel so well developed and have fun little quirks about them. 
I loved the plot of this one, it felt very relevant, both the hollowpox and how people treat one another and the ~conspiracy theories and alternate facts~.
