Naked In Death is the first book in the "In Death" series. And this is a series I have been wanting to try out for such a long time and boy I am really forging into a lengthly series and boy is it overwhelming. I have read many long series, however, in those series I got caught up in those early on. In this series I have 50 books that are in this series. And I do love the epic love theme for this series where this series revolves around this one main couple and I ADORE that so much. Naked In Death was quite a fun and thrilling ride, I was nervous for it, but it ended up being a win for me!! 



  

  Eve had no trouble picking Roarke out of the crowd. He was alone. There were others lined in the pew with him, but Eve recognized the solitary quality that surrounded him. There could have been ten thousand in the building, and he would have remained aloof from them.
  




Naked in Death features our heroine, who is a police investigator for New York City, and its year 2058. In this world technology has advanced, physical books are rare, coffee is pricey and the real stuff is unheard of and the gun laws have been practically abolished for the public but our heroine Eve, is about to be startled into a reality that violence and crime will happen even without guns being so easily accessible. When the granddaughter of a senator is brutally murdered, Eve is called on the case and her prime suspect is Irish billionaire Roarke. And even though evidence is pushing her to investigate Roarke.....an instinct is telling her it isn't him and someone she would least suspect. But as she draws closer to the real criminal, a connection is formed with Roarke, a powerful desire builds within Eve to explore with Roarke but will she and Roarke find the killer in time?

Naked In Death was such a fun book and I admit I had SO many doubts about starting this series. Its such a hyped series and anyone that knows me knows HYPED books hardly ever work for me. I will say that this was such a refreshing read and I love crime solving thrillers and this was such a great book. I haven't read too many futuristic books in romance but I always get a kick out of them when I do and I am definitely exciting to go on this "In Death" journey. But boy its going to be a long journey. 



  

  I respect the privacy of the people I care about. And I care about you, Eve. I don’t know why, precisely, but you pull something from me.
  




Naked In Death was such a captivating story and I was pulled in pretty quickly into the mystery and I quickly fell in love with our heroine. She was so strong, capable and yet had so many vulnerabilities that the reader will find relatable. She can kick booty but at the same time has weaknesses like everyone else does. She stands by her principles but is also open minded and once she meets Roarke, her priorities take a unique turn. I really loved how driven she is in getting justice for these women being murdered. 




But Eve had already scented it, already—despite herself—begun to smile. “It’s coffee,” she murmured, unaware of the way her voice softened as she reached for the simple brown bag Mavis held. “Coffee.” Illusions shattered, Mavis stared. “The man’s got more money than God, and he sends you a bag of coffee?”
“Real coffee.”
“Oh, well then.” In disgust, Mavis waved a hand. “I don’t care what the damn stuff costs a pound, Dallas. A woman wants glitter.”
Eve brought the bag to her face and sniffed deep. “Not this woman. The son of a bitch knew just how to get to me.” She sighed. “In more ways than one.”




The world that J.D. Robb creates is quite political at times, but I honestly didn't find that it overtakes the story at all and I breathed a sigh of relief. Its just part of the world but the author doesn't get overzealous in the politics of the world. I really respected the balance that you find in that. The futuristic world was so intriguing and I was really stunned by the details but it didn't overwhelm this reader in any way. I didn't feel like there was a overload of world building details so I applaud J.D. Robb for this. 



The romance that builds between Eve and Roarke was such a beautiful one and I was stunned by these in between moments that sparked such sensuality and strong connection between these two. Even though there is a serial killer on the loose, Roarke is prime suspect through it all, it doesn't stop their relationship from forming in such a pivotal way and whew does it get HOT in some parts. I love seeing Roarke break through those barriers that Eve puts up and get to the feminine part of her that she hides beneath the toughness of being a police detective. 



  

  It stunned him how much he could want her still, baffled him that she could be blind to how helpless he was under the clawing need for her. It infuriated him that she could, simply by existing, be his weakness.
  




Overall I got a kick out of Naked In Death and I am so eager to begin this journey with Roarke and Eve in their relationship and in solving crime....bring on the sensuality, the danger and thrillers and plot building I fell in love with in Naked in Death. THRILLING IN EVERY WAY!

This was a reread for me. I forgot how much I enjoy this storyline. You have a very strong independent woman Eve, she is a cop who solves murders. He case runs her into Rourke, who she cant help by try to push away but he keeps pushing back into her life no matter how hard she tries to get away. The tension that gets built up between the two is frustrating but oh satisfying when they get together.

This book just kinda popped up on my screen and I added it to my TBR list without giving it much thought... 
I am very glad that I gave it a try.. It has everything that appeals to a reader and once I started reading it, I was hooked. The main character Eve Dallas (a cop) is a badass, ready to fight for justice and can fend for herself... She doesn't have to depend upon some kind of a hero to save her like a damsel in distress. I absolutely hate those. She is reserved and doesn't easily let anyone into her life considering her past until Roarke comes in.
The chemistry between Eve and Roarke is great and they have their moments though it takes a back seat. Eve usually lets work take over her life, and Roarke is there to make that harder for her to do.

Overall I loved this book and highly recommend it...
Oh and this is my first review (I have been compelling myself to start one since 2021) and I hope to keep this up with at least 1 book review per month.

Since this was written 20 years ago, the "futuristic" setting of 2050-something hasn't held up very well - lots of transferring stuff around on discs, basically anything computer technology-wise made me cringe. The plot, however, was well-paced, if predictable. Eve and Roarke were great, and though their relationship was a bit fast-tracked for my taste, I still loved their chemistry. I really liked the futuristic-Law-&-Order-with-romance vibe, so I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series.

I am still amazed that I like these books. 

This is the first in the series. We learn how Eve meets Roarke. I like my series in the right order - so after reading one way in the middle and deciding that I would like these books, I will read them in order. 

Craig likes them too. He had suggested that we listen to this with his 95 year old father in the car. Whoa! Don't even think about that!

I'm currently dithering between 3 and 4 stars. Reckon that makes it 3.5?

Anyway, this book was much like I expected. It's a crime/mystery/thriller but it's set in the future with new technology. The basic ingredients are the same but a few spices to make it interesting. I enjoyed it. It wasn't amazing!!! but it wasn't bad. I liked Eve she was tough but with a squishy centre at times. She was a good character to follow. I did question some of her decisions but she was never crazy I was just a but like really?

I think the things which put me off are simple. The POV hopped about a bit. The switching head things in the middle of a paragraph type thing was off-putting. If you want multiy pov great but keep it defined. This is something I've noticed Roberts do before though so I kind of expected it.

The other issue was Roarke. Fine if wants to be known only by one name go for it but I found it a little ridiculous and we had basically no backstory to him so he just felt so 1d. I've requested the next book from the library though (I'm on a waitlist) so hopefully he gets some more personality later on. I also didn't love their romance. If felt sudden I like some building of tension! Also the way Roarke forces Eve to accept what he was doing when it came to sex was a bit squiffy she want comfortable and he should have accepted it. And the way she so easily brushed off get past experience in one way to sleep with him and have her sexual awakening yet had flashbacks and trauma in other circumstance felt poorly done. I would have liked more effort to be put in to demonstrate the psychological and emotional impact.

It was enjoyable though even if I guessed the mystery about halfway in I didn't get everything so I was still absorbed in the mystery of whodunnit. It was flawed but this may simply be the book showing some age I don't know how the series has progressed there are a few books.

Fabulous Sci-Fi Romance read!

The world we know today has been totally enveloped in technology and the governments have evolved too. But murder will alays be murder, it's just the investigation methods that change.

I loved Eve! She is smart, ballsy and totally badass. She won't sit back and let politics determine justice. And Roarke, well he is a bit of an enigma. Their passion is totally at odds with his position as number one suspect!

Taut technological thriller with some well developed psychological WTF moments! The devious and downright evil acts that are committed. OMG my skin crawled!

Za sve ima prvi put u životu, pa i za knjige Nore Roberts (čekam ove moje sad da me rastave u komentarima). 

Elem, storytime: nisam nikad mislila da ću da pročitam išta od ove autorke, ali gledala sam skoro onaj predobar film Se7en i baš mi probudilo krejving za nečim sličnim. Guglam ja tako po internetu 'books like the movie Se7en' i na dva-tri spiska vidim prvu knjigu ovog serijala. Pročitam o čemu se radi, ne zvuči kao da vređa inteligenciju i, gle stvarno, zapravo je solidna knjižica. 

Nije ovo neka vrhunska literatura, ali je bolje od mnogo hvaljenijih stvari sa nešto lepšom reputacijom. Zabavno je, a, kad se sve oduzme, u srži je ljubić. Ima taj neki vajb kao i Se7en (ne znam da li je omaž, pošto se ne sećam šta je prvo izašlo), samo ništa ne uradi sa tim do kraja. 

Najtužnija stvar je što bi u rukama boljeg autora, Naked in Death bio bi fenomenalan roman, a ovako ostaje kao mediokritet. Možda nekad nastavim dalje, mada realno žena ovde ima 50+ knjiga, ain't nobody got time for that. 

3.5/4 ⭐ jer se ne pretvara da je nešto što nije.

While it certainly defies many genre standards, I'm going to use Naked in Death to tick off my 2018 Book Riot Read Harder Challenge "A classic of genre fiction."

Set in a dark future, Lieutenant Eve Dallas is drawn into the investigation of a graphic and horrific murder of a beautiful sex worker who is also related to a family of powerful politicians. During the investigation she crosses paths with an enigmatic, brilliant, and supremely sexy billionaire who may also be a suspect.

Overall, I enjoyed Robb's take on a gritty, futuristic NYC where guns are "old fashioned" and hard to come by and other various technologies are used to help predict and solve crimes. I really liked Eve's prickly character, her dedication to her job and her craft, and hey, there's a cat hero!

That said, the overall mystery wasn't super deep and I found the initial love scenes between Rourke and Eve to be a bit troubling, especially from a 2018 standpoint. There is a lot of rape in this book and I just wished there wasn't a gray area for the two main characters at first. I'm hoping this won't be a recurring theme in this series.

Also, I was a bit annoyed that Eve was pretty easily swayed into using Rourke's rich-boy tools to get the job done. Money talks I guess.

I love the entire In Death series, but this one holds a special place since it is the first meeting of Eve and Roarke. Great introduction to a long running series. This is the third time I've read this book.
