There are eleven books (chapters) in this historical novel. It takes until book 4 (Rome) for the story to really pick up. By book seven (The Pope) the book starts its agonizing crawl to its close. Readers who aren't familiar with Michaelangelo's works should have an art history book handy to visualize the pieces described as the author goes into lengthy detail over each of his major works. Now that I'm done reading the book, I'm ready for something lighter.

literally the best book i've ever read. the writing is immaculate. i'm not religious in the slightest but i thoroughly enjoyed every last moment of it and wholeheartedly believe everyone can. i just ?? i have no words. perfection. 10/10.
