I will be thinking about this book for the rest of my days. 

The journey of Isabel through pain, desperation and eventual peace to let go of her daughter was felt in every single word of this story that quickly becomes a page-turner. 

I truly don’t think there’s an easy way to write about mourning and loss, but yet Isabel’s style allows to see beauty, even in the rawest and most painful situations.

I feel empty after this book as I realized that, as a reader, I couldn’t let go of Paula either. Still, it is worth every tear shed. Magnificent.

Isabel often gets bad press, perhaps because her books aren’t considered challenging reads. But maybe sometimes you just need something like this. To me, she’s a great storyteller, and this book is a perfect example of that.

Beautiful thing, proves that Allende is better when she's narrating her own life. At least in my opinion. Which doesn't mean her other books aren't good, because they are. 
Paula is much darker than Sum of Our Days and even My Invented Country, but the way Allende ties her feelings and experience with Paula, the hope and angst of that, and the tidbits of her life, are wonderful and make for a good experience. To some extent, it's really heartbreaking.

 إن من أصعب ما قد تمر به المرأة أن تفقد ولدًا، قطعة منها، شعرت بيه منذ بداية تكونه في رحمها وشهدت أول صرخاته وبكاءه وضحكاته.. 
فكيف إذا كانت تفقد جزءًا منه كل يوم ولكنها لا تستطيع تحمل تلك الحقيقة؟

فلم تجد العزيزة إيزابيل متنفسًا وهي تشاهد ابنتها تغيب وتبعد عنها بعقلها بمرور الوقت غير الكتابة، فأوقعت العالم في حب تلك الفتاة پاولا الذكية المرحة طيبة القلب والتي تركت أثرها في كل من مروا بحياتها .. فتكتب لها إيزابيل لعلها تقوم من سباتها يومًا وتقرأ ما كانت تمر بيه والدتها من عذاب وتعرف كم يحبها زوجها المخلص الذي أخد في الذبول إلى جانبها مع عدم فقدان الإيمان والأمل..

"لقد رحت أتقشر خلال هذه الشهور الطويلة مثل بصلة، قشرة بعد قشرة، وكنت أتبدل، فأنا لم أعد المرأة نفسها، لقد منحتني ابنتي فرصة النظر إلى أعماقي واكتشاف هذه الفضاءات الداخلية الفارغة والقاتمة والساكنة بصورة غريبة، والتي لم يخطر في بالي استكشافها قط من قبل"

تكتب أيضاً إلى جانب ذلك قصة حياتها، فتكشف عن كاتبة لا تختلف كثيرًا عن أبطال رواياتها المغامرين، فهي متهورة مندفعة منذ طفولتها المليئة بالأحداث والتنقلات إلى أن اصبحت زوجة وأم كانت لا تخشى شيئًا، ولا تعطي أهمية للانتقادات بداية من عملها بالصحافة وكتاباتها التي كانت تنتقد المجتمع الذكوري التشيلي، فهي تفتش عن المخاطر ولا تتخاذل عن المواجهة وتجربة كل ما هو جديد ولا تكل من البحث عن الحب.

 لا بأس أن تبكي الأشياء التي تؤلمك، ربما خرجت منك للأبد.. لا بأس يا إيزابيل أن تضعي يدك على قلبك فتشعري به ينتفض، ربما رحلت باولا بجسدها وذكاءها ولكن ستبقى أبدًا محبتها لكِ، وسيبقى ذلك الكتاب خالدًا ليعبر عن محبتك لها وألمك في رحلة صراع الموت من أجلها.

“الرواية تصنع بالعمل والقصة القصيرة بالإلهام.”

 بعض اقتباسات الرواية تعتبر سحابة جيدة لكل أعمال إيزابيل الليندي، ففيها ايزابيل النسوية الشجاعة، وإيزابيل العاشقة المندفعة، وإيزابيل المحبة لوطنها وكم تأثرت بالمنفى عنه، وإيزابيل والأشخاص الملهمون لأبطال روايتها-ربما تأثرنا الشديد بأبطالها ناجم عن كونهم مستوحون من شخصيات حقيقية وليس من صنع الخيال وحده-. نرى في الرواية حبها للمغامرة مثل أبطالها، ونجد أم قلبها ينفطر على مدار أشهر لوداع ابنتها، وصحافية تتستر على الهاربين من الانقلاب. نجد رحلة ايزابيل إلى أن أصبحت روائية وستعجب من تأخر البداية وعظمة ما حققته من نجاح سريع، وتعد تلك الرواية بداية جيدة للدخول في عالم الليندي. نجد في تلك الرواية جزء من تاريخ تشيلي ودول أمريكا اللاتينية العصيب وسيذهلك كم تشابه الظروف مع مصر والدول العربية، كيف تعبث أمريكا في تلك الدول وتكرر نفس اللعبة بطرق ملتوية ومختلفة ولكنها في النهاية تنجح وتحقق الهدف.



“أصبحت شبه مجنون. لا أستطيع التركيز في عملي. أرى أرقامًا على شاشة الحاسوب فأظنها كتابة صينية،يحدثونني فلا أرد، وأعيش ساهيًا بطريقة لا أدري معها كيف يتحملونني في المكتب، وأقترف أخطاء مريعة. إنني أشعر بأن باولا بعيدة جدًا! لو تدرين كم أحبها وأحتاج إليها.. لقد فقدت حياتي اللون من دونها وأصبح كل شيء رماديًا. إنني أنتظر دائمًا أن يرن الهاتف، وأن تكوني أنتِ على الجانب الأخر من الخط لتخبريني بصوت صاخب بأن باولا قد استيقظت.”

Isabel Allende ya se había ganado el primer puesto en mi lista de escritoras favoritas de toda la vida, pero con este libro también se ganó mi alma y mi corazón. 
Este libro es como tener una charla profunda y reflexiva con un amigo que confía lo suficiente en vos como para contarte su vida entera y sabés que a partir de ese momento el vínculo ya no será el mismo, sino más fuerte.

I had to push myself to finish this book. I struggled through some of the sections on Chile's political strife. I labored through the three, four, sometimes five page paragraphs. Several times, I debated re-donating it to our library's foundation. But, there came a moment when I realized there was a reason I was supposed to be reading it. And, the Universe had actually timed it quite perfectly...during a time when I was feeling like a lone "witch" in a world that baffles me on a daily basis. 

I just got done adding all the rest of of Isabel Allende's books to my "Want to Read" list. All except Daughter of Fortune, which is the book that created the thread of a connection I felt with Isabel for the past decade. When I closed the back cover of Paula just five minutes ago, it was clear that my connection to this strong, imperfect, and passionate woman is solid and is a reassurance that I am never alone.
