I think this is a fascinating novel. Although I hesitate to call it a novel, it's more like a parable or a fable for adults. A more interesting and easier-to-digest form that delivers key information, in this case, about spirituality. I wouldn't call this a good STORY, but in terms of delivering spiritual insights, it's pretty damn fantastic, and I was hooked.

Certainly not a book for the close-minded, however.

If I would have rated this book based purely on the simplistic writing and flat story, I would have given it only 1 lonely star. It was irritatingly hokey, corny, gooey, and just plain fantastical...no subtlety to be found on these 255 pages. In order to get through the book, I had to view it as a fable...a simplistic story designed to teach me something. That helped tremendously, although I still barely made it to the end. 

In the end, I felt 3 stars was a fair rating because I did walk away with something in the end. The author is onto something with the 9 Insights. I'm not a New Ager, in fact I'm quite rooted to the earth, but I was able to pull enough out of the corny explanations of each insight to apply them to my very normal, often boring life. (While reading the book, I actually had a terrible situation with a neighbor who verbally attacked me and it was very clear to me where she was coming from and much easier for me to let it roll off with the help of this book.) It was easier to apply the earlier insights to my life...it became quite difficult with the latter ones that were way 'out there'. By the end of the 'fable', the author was so far into fantasy it was extremely annoying...I can't even imagine 8 out of 10 people I know even approaching the behaviors he presented. He outed himself as a typical American when he stated that democracy moved humanity's conflict with each other from physical to mental. Ummmm, there are still many countries that have not even made the shift to democracy and they are still very much involved in physical conflict (typical for an American to forget such a large portion of the world). This made the already fantastical ending hard to even take a wee bit seriously. However, I did take something from this book...I think I will make a list of the Insights in my down-to-earth language so that I can continue to apply them to my life in a realistic way. If I become invisible in the end, well don't come looking for me :)
