This is a perfectly cromulent fantasy about a boy with a mysterious heritage. Gavin Stokes, who sees things other people can't, is sent off to stay with his crazy aunt in the Cornwall. There he comes into his heritage. And magic comes back into the world.

The story bounces back and forth between Gavin's world and the world of John Fiste (aka Johannes Faust). There is a mermaid (or maybe a siren?), a holly dryad, a mysterious well, a castle that is remarkably preserved, and a Secret Heritage.

It's a well-written that made me think a bit of Alan Garner and Amanda Hemingway novels. I'm not quite sure I'm sucked in enough to read the other 2 books in the series, but maybe I will.
