This was an interesting book with characters I loved and was overall an interesting read. Though I haven't read a book with that was exactly like this, or even mostly like this, there were moments that felt familiar though it might've been tropes and similar scenes that I read in other books that it reminded me of.

what you may not like:
the "to" of the enemies to lovers was very short. in fact when I found out how much time had passed i was shocked because I thought it was longer than that. 
the villain is not the monster everyone thinks he is and we find that out at the very beginning. 
there are some scenes that didnt include characters that should have made some kind of an appearance and it seemed off that they werent there. 
we are provided snippets of info but nothing comes from it leaving you with questions (BUTTTT this is the start of a series :) so it can be just laying out the frame work for the rest of the books )


what you’ll like:
🌶plot to spice ratio! there are books that are all plot and a sprinkle of spice to enchance the romance and then there are books were youre just there for The spice. this book did a 50/50. for me it made the spice that much more enjoyable. (For those who are interested I believe there were about 9 scenes & only 1 was a fade to black😏)
the romance! we love a hero who has created a reputation for being a monster but hes truly not abut is also a "no one hurts my wife and lives." i also appreciated the dynamic between the couple. i know we ALL get annoyed when the characters just fail to TALK to each other and all the drama could have been avoided if they just communicated. well these two do both. They have there spats, walk away from each other because they miss understood the other but they come back to each other and talk it out!

this is a light fantasy, I look forward to seeing the fantasy world expand as the series continues, I am so interested in learning more about the side characters; our generals, king, the damn queen smh. I cant wait to see what Eleanor learns and how her friendship with Ben expands. this was such a fun read. a great start to a series that you can tell has no where to go but up (and get better with each book) 
sometimes i really hate reading book one before they are published... now i have to wait for book two which i am convinced i am going to LOVE! some of my favorite characters will be the center

I think I would rate this story a 3.5
I really liked Charlotte, she was willing to do whatever it takes to protect her family and her kingdom even if that means marrying a man everyone says is a monster.. Evan is a conqueror, he wants to stop the slave trade at all costs even if that means forcing a marriage between him and Charlotte. 
I did think that Evan and Charlottes romance was very quick.. I completly love instant attraction and chemistry, but the feelings seemed to come so fast., even if they werent what each other thought I thought there should be some mutual distrust, at least for a little while.. Although farther along in the story I did begin to really like them together. They were a cute couple that did their best to not keep any secrets from each other. 

There were some plot points that I expected to play a bigger role and just kind of pettered out into nothing.. Im hoping that they will pick up in following books
However I did love the overall plot line of Evan taking over kingdoms in order to force them to stop the slave trade.. I loved the world building, and what strong women Charlotte and her sisters are. I can't wait to see what her sisters get up to in the future, and while Im pretty sure we were introduced to their future love interests, I can't wait to see how they get a HEA.
