Sunny Rolls the Dice is about two girls growing up and growing apart. Sunny, our returning main character, feels left out as her friends become interested in boys and fashion. Holm really hits the painful feels that one can have as a tween outsider maturing in a different way to their friends. If you've ever read Roller Girl, this is the same story, just with DnD instead of Roller Derby. And honestly, if this is a story that you think will appeal to a younger reader in your life, pick up Roller Derby instead because it does a better job of talking about the fact that there's nothing wrong with the fact that people may develop different interests and grow apart. It's a painful event, but it doesn't mean that the other party is a bad person or you've been betrayed. Sunny Rolls the Dice doesn't really get into didactic messages which I don't actually think was a good choice for the target audience. So, a very readable story, but one that's been done better elsewhere.

My son, grade 5, and I love the Sunny books, and this one focused on grade 7 Sunny and her new-found love of Dungeons & Dragons is a fun instalment that takes on some serious pressures for girls to be "groovy" or cool, often at the expense of their true interests and comfort levels. Sunny finds her friendship with Deb changing as Deb focuses on teen fashion, Farah Fawcett hair, and boys as more-than-friends, while Sunny still likes dressing up her Skipper doll and hanging out the boys who are running a D&D group on Saturdays. At first Deb joins in, but quickly decides that she and Sunny are too old to be playing games. Sunny has to decide whether Deb and the hilarious Groovy Meter that appears throughout the story are really measuring what Sunny finds important. Role-playing games are a fantastic place for girls and boys to express all kinds of identities and explore all kinds of roles in and out of their genders. Sunny has a supportive family by her side as she considers who she wants to hang out with and whether or not those Gloria Vanderbilt jeans are more important that a D&D mini-fig.
