well this was exactly as advertised: a slasher at a summer camp. definitely not for the faint of heart as the gore and violence was a LOT! and I’ve seen some reviews say that this book is classed as YA which… seems very wrong to me.

ok so I really didn't like that one, but at the same time I keep thinking about it so at least it's not something forgettable. And I probably didn't like it for reasons that are diffrent from other peoples'. 

The thing I really enjoyed was the part about a religious fanatic murdering children in very gruesome ways. I LOVED that part, and the fact that the author didn't shy away from it, especially since I'm reading it in 2019 when everybody is offended by fucking everything. Just for that I'm giving it an extra star.

The part I didn't like is the part everybody else seems to have liked: the letters that Martin’s mom sent him. Martin's mom was a weirdo, and even though I don't like kids and apparently don't mind them being murdered all over the place, I minded her relationship with him. If you have a kid, even if you're still 29, in my book you not supposed to dance on the table in your bra while they are in the apartment, and you're not supposed to send them fake letters that make them question your sanity and safety (apparently, Martin doesn't, he instantly knows it's a joke, well good for him because I was wondering the whole time). That poor kid is 11 and even though he obviously wants to and loves watching horror movies with you, he still thinks there a man in his room at night and he's not feeling super safe. So maybe stop with the gory stories ans be a responsible mom. 

Overall this book was disconcerting because it was an extremely gory and fun slasher, but it also explored in surface a mother/son relationship that either needed to be left alon, or explored in more deth, and that's not what I signed up for.

While his mother pursues her dream of working on a horror film set, Martin spends the summer at Bible camp, where acts of sadistic violence transpire.
