Though an enjoyable read that promotes practicality and useful approaches in running online information businesses, I can't feel justified rating it anywhere above 2/5.

Here's why: 

1) You'd unavoidably find the author, throughout a number of chapters, almost senselessly repeating his point to stress it whilst failing to source quality arguments or deep dives for back-ups. For example, he stresses the importance of understanding/bonding with the target audience but only amassed cursory glances at ideas such as surveys without discussing further why his suggestions should prove to work. 

Those wanting to solidly understand, and apply the designing processes, techniques, and values of surveys (and survey funnels, the examination of which Lott again completely omitted) - may I direct your attention to R. Levesque's work on survey models in his book Ask? You'd climb up the learning curve faster dissecting the subject thoroughly rather than scratching the surface, especially in the context of running start-ups.

2) Lott may have overly invested himself in the belief that good content must be written in simple forms. Any content created jargon-free, presented in conversational tones and delivered at an easy-to-digest rhythm is great. But that doesn't have to come at the expense of leaving the audience feeling as though they've just been intellectually insulted. 

3) My confidence in Lott and this book exponentially declined in light of the frequent appearance of typos and words misspelt. Was he churning out his work due to time constraints, passing up on chances to proof-read even at the risk of diminishing credibility? 

4) Unjust simplifications and assumptions underlying his recommendations in general.
