This was so much fun. Like a combination of Terry Pratchett and HP Lovecraft, but better than that seems like it would be.

Johannes Cabal the Necromancer very much surpasses my expectations for it. I was prepared for some element of tragedy, I was prepared for the way he presented Satan, I was prepared to probably be creeped out by the carnival that is key to the entire plot.

What I was not prepared for: the clever, dry, dark humor; the inexplicable wit that was present in the writing; the way in which I cared for Johannes and Horst and the skill with which Howard so easily manipulated my feelings about the former of the two (for an example, read the scene with the ghost at the train station - my opinion of Johannes 360'd).

Definitely one of the best books I've read for some time. The ending, I though, fell a little flat - after such rich narrative for the previous 300 pages, the last two or three just seem a little dry, a little forced. While I'll definitely put the next book on my 'to-read' list, I really wish I could have seen more of what was going on in Johannes head, some more brilliance, in those last couple of pages.

Like it but not love it. Sarcasm game was spectacularly on point, which is a bonus. a lot of things didn't make any sense, but then again, what would I expect from a book about a necromancer who got himself into some kind of a deal with Satan that he must use one of his brands of carnivals to cultivate damned souls, all done with a help from his vampiric brother. Yeah, I know.

This book was not my cup of tea, sadly. It was not without its moments of charm, but the main character is an entitled snot and only barely redeems himself out of guilt. The book was an interesting enough concept, but it was very flat in terms of the writing style and the story line felt too predictable. At half-way through the book, I thought, "Surely it's got to hit a climax soon, right?" It did not. Most of the book was anecdotal tales of how Johannes Cabal and his conjured lackeys snatched the souls of the unwary and the wicked. I thought maybe the criminals showing up would have been more interesting, but that too was just a brief scene before moving on.

Horst deserved better.

I probably will not be reading on in the series, but I must say I really love the design of the cover. I'm a sucker for a good classic print design.

Ah, I knew it... :) and I don't even care that it was a bit predictable. Great book.
