Philosophical novel that explores humanity through the lens of one of literature's oldest monsters. Pining for companionship, Grendel seeks a connection with its human neighbors but they are frightened and callous to the point of rejection. Drilling into human nature, fear of the other, myth, religion, power politics, and loneliness. There are a number of striking scenes that stick with the reader along with insightful meditations of who we are as humans, but there are points that lag. The meaning would likely shine brighter in a reading group.

This book is awful. It devolves from needless exercise in low-grade existentialism to just plain old nonsense around chapter 7. *Grendel* thinks it's five times more clever than it actually is. Do not read.

This was another book I read for school, and it was definitely very interesting. With that being said, there were definitely some aspects that were either plainly confusing or disturbing *cough cough chapter 7* Overall though, I always love a good book to provoke existentialist thoughts, and it was cool to see some scenes from Beowulf explained from Grendel's side.
