But then as now, tuberculosis does not travel primarily through paths forged by race, except insofar as human power structures force it to.

But in residential schools, the rate was 8,000 per 100,000--meaning that 8 percent of all kids confined in these schools died of tuberculosis each year. And these inequities persist—today, Inuit people are over 400 times more likely to contract tuberculosis than white Canadians. 

Framing illness as even involving morality seems to me a mistake, because of course cancer does not give a shit whether you are a good person. Biology has no moral compass. It does not punish the evil and reward the good. It doesn't even know about evil and good. 

Stigma is a way of saying, "You deserved to have this happen," but implied within the stigma is also, "And I don't deserve it, so I don't need to worry about it happening to me."

In the U.S., we still often use the phrase TB control" in public health departments, whereas for illnesses like cancer we're more likely to use the phrase "cancer care." This "control over care" dynamic, as the physician and an- thropologist Paul Farmer termed it, is seen with many infectious diseases.

Why must we treat what are obviously systemic problems as failures of individual morality? Many patients have described the experience of receiving their drugs as humiliating they may be handed their medicine while being told that this only happened be- cause they were unclean or poor or otherwise lesser.23 This is often not an environment patients are excited to return to—and yet somehow we always seem to blame the patient for noncompliance, rather than blaming the structures of the social order that make compliance more difficult.

Tuberculosis is so often, and in so many ways, a disease of vicious cycles: It's an illness of poverty that worsens poverty. It's an illness that worsens other illnesses—from HIV to diabetes. It's an illness of weak healthcare systems that weakens healthcare systems. It's an illness of malnutrition that worsens malnutrition. And it's an illness of the stigmatized that worsens stigmatization. In the face of all this, it's easy to despair. TB doesn't just flow through the meandering river of injustice; TB broadens and deepens that river.

i also questioned this when first picking up his book, but everything i have highlighted so far is exactly why it was so right for John Green to write it. I’ve never been so heartbroken, and hopeful and impacted by a nonfiction novel like this. it’s not just about us. i think this book might stick with me for a while.

People often ask me why I’m obsessed with tuberculosis. I’m a novelist, not a historian of medicine. TB is rare where I live. It doesn’t affect me. And that’s all true. But I hear Shreya, and Henry, and so many others calling to me: Marco. Marco. Marco.

An excellent historical analysis of the intertwined destinies of tuberculosis and humanity, while giving the reader an on-the-ground peek into the current impact of tuberculosis on millions around the world.

Has the right amount of sentimentality mixed with research findings. I don't The book was meant to be a journalistic deep dive into the history of tuberculosis; despite how the title may have seemed. I think ultimately the goal was for us to just care.

I think realistically it is a 4 star book, but it moved me so much I’m going to give it 5 stars. It’s the third public health book I’ve read this year and the first that moved me emotionally- it did a good job transcending statistics to paint the problem and humanize the human processes that create the inequalities that lead to preventable loss of life. I found myself tearing up multiple times listening to it. It truly is cruel how we see the world in cost effectiveness and through these systems put a price on different lives and weigh them more. This book didn't teach me that - its something we should all realize - but it is making me think about how I as an individual can do more to help make an impact. With everything going on in the world, I think I have become a bit more of a pessimist, but now I really am charged with thinking about small ways to create change (and build into bigger ones). We should care baseline because we are people. Thank you John Green for a little bit of hope in the good of humanity. (Read this via audiobook and it was honestly really good).

this is the type of non-fiction that i absolutely adore. i had no idea that john green did non-fiction but seeing someones passion on a subject shine through the pages made me not want to put this down. henry’s story had me on the verge of tears which is so rare for me. so informative on the injustice of our global systems, this should be required reading.

this book opened my eyes to the deep complexities to a disease that I didn’t even know was still a problem. It was not only devastating at times, but incredibly hopeful for the future we can create. I would recommend this for anyone and everyone to read to really understand the world that we live in and what we can do to fix it 🦠🩷

this is so wonderful; it is scientific where it needs to be but largely a commentary on the social and historical context of tuberculosis. I think the thing that strikes me most about this book is its empathy and compassion for the real human consequences to disease. I would highly recommend this—it’s short and digestible but very important and I learned a lot
