A fable-like string of tales about a group of paisanos who are the cause of their own problems. It's both comical and tragic, often within the same situations - half the time I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I think this is the book that marks Steinbeck's bloom as a talented literary author.

Oh I loved it! It's so sillllly. Silly men doing silly things, while drinking endless gallons of wine. I can't even explain how much thirst for wine this book inspires. I drank 3/4ths of a bottle of wine last night because it made me so thirsty.

If I had to summarize this book in a few words, I would say this: Deluded men with hearts of gold, constantly committing minor transgressions, living simple small-town lives, while incessantly, happily drunk.

Easiest read ever. Recommended!
