This book was okay. Just okay. It's one of those plots with a naive character (granted this one is supposed to be 13 years old so naivety is accurate) where the whole plot is ultimately led by the character making poor choices for most of the book. It's not really my cup of tea. Additionally, the writing style is really simple and not all that appealing to me as an adult reader. Granted, this is probably a YA book - though it SHOULD be labeled more at a middle grade reading level - but I think that it was a bit too young for me when I was a YA reader.

The characters weren't awful. A little one note, generally. There wasn't much range to their emotional ranges. However, they all had a good purpose in the story and I appreciated that. I think the Spook and the mom are my favorites.

Ultimately, I don't think I'll be reading on in my series, but I'm okay with having given it a shot.

Now now, no need to be slightly horrified, my Little Barnacles, or fear for the future of the planet. The fact that I did not convulse while reading the book doesn't mean I loved it. Which means doom and destruction will have to wait for a bit [insert sighs of utter, total and complete relief here]. Okay, to be honestly honest, I didn't, you know, NOT love the book and stuff. I might even have enjoyed it a little. ← I never wrote this and you didn't read it. Go home, you're drunk. But I didn't, you know, lurve it and stuff, either. Which means, you know, that I'm still me and stuff. Feel better now? Good. You're welcome.

➽ I didn't go in Full YA-Allergy Mode (FYAM™) while reading this Surprisingly Non Suicide-Inducing Piece of YA Literature (SNSIPoAYL™) because:
✔ The writing is pretty good It's not badly written.
✔ The story is fast-paced It's not too boring.
✔ The youngish hero is quite likable The disgustingly underage MC is neither totally unlikable nor exasperatingly immature.

➽ I will not bother reading the rest of this series because:
✘ The story isn't bad but desperately lacks originality.
✘ YA Fantasy coming of age stories = YAWN.
✘ The story isn't bad but is horrifyingly lacking in the Deliciously Horrific Stuff Department (DHSD™).
✘ YA Fantasy coming of age stories = YAWN.
✘ The story isn't bad but revoltingly lacks Scrumptious Rated R Moments (SRRM™).
✘ YA Fantasy coming of age stories = YAWN.
✘ I can't be bothered.
✘ YA Fantasy coming of age stories = YAWN.
✘ I can't be bothered. Ha.

Also, some ill-intentioned nemeses well-intentioned friends told me later books in this series were really bad. So QED and stuff.

My case I rest.

I already read this story up to the eighth book two years ago. I never followed the series and now they have new books out but I don't remember what it's about. That's why I'm re-reading it. 

This book is pure genius. Everything was written perfectly. I usually don't like this kind of writing style (which sounds kind of old) but it made perfect sense with this book. The narrator, Tom, is beginning his journey to become the Spook's apprentice. He still doesn't know much yet but he's a good boy and has the courage even though he's really scared. I can see that he has grown throughout this story. The descriptions in this book was also really detailed but I was never once annoyed by it. There was a good balance between dialogue and descriptions. 

I really connected with Tom through everything. I felt his fear, loneliness, anger, etc. Even though becoming a Spook is a hard career path, he never once backed down from the challenge. Sure, he did doubt himself sometimes, but that felt realistic and he worked through his problem.

The Last Apprentice is a chilling and adventurous story about someone who deals with things that go bump in the night. After all, that is their job. And if they don't do it, who will? I absolutely recommend this to everyone.

Ok so this book was somewhat scary. I didn't think that it would be when I started reading it...even though the title and book cover are creepy. But anyway I got through it and I actually liked it! I would like to read more in the series and find out what Tom learns and encounters. Both Alice and Tom's mom creep me out but I want to know more. I want to think Alice will be good but, for some reason I feel she might turn out to be a malevolent witch in the future. He just didn't have the heart to put her in the pit. I suppose that could turn her bad sooner than later...now it's just a toss up and waiting game until she becomes a woman. Also Tom's mom is hiding something about herself...what the hell is it?!
