Read this twice as a child: first for pleasure since I loved  The Star of Kazan  so much, and then again in secondary school a few years later. Wonderful prose, but this book is objectively trash. Weirdly racist colonial garbage with the most passive main character I had come across. Does not need to be on the curriculum with the way it glorifies Empire and has the mixed-race love interest be a strange exotic savage trope.

beautiful beautiful book, I read it when I was quite young and although it's for younger teens I find myself re-reading over and over

4.5 ! This is a book that has been sitting on my TBR pile for over a year now..but I finally decided to read it,which I'm glad I did because this book was wonderful !!!
