There wasn't a single female character in this entire book. That alone merits a one-star review. Furthermore, for a book that documents many things, nothing actually happens. Captain Nemo is never fleshed out enough as a character for us to care about, Aronnax is a plot device, Conseil is tokenized, and Ned Land is the only character that DOES anything in this book, albeit all he does is complain and be the token Toxic Masculinity character. I understand that the book was written as a sort of field guide/ethnology/documentation of events, but there are ways to do without it being so incredibly dull. If you truly want to read this book, I recommend doing so with lots of drawings because maybe you'll be able to stay awake while doing so.

I can see why Jules Verne was the pioneer of Sci Fi Adventure. A well written, descriptive adventure of Capt. Nemo and the Nautilus as it travels the globe and the depths of the sea.
