4.25 ⭐️ Once again an absolute pleasure to relive this story. Learning about Iran’s history through an intergenerational tale of a muslim family where each of its members find their own path. I love the way Abdolah portrays each character within the bounds of their life and experiences, without taking away the tolerance, edge or sharpness of the religious and political influences. This time around I annotated my copy, following the themes of gender, modernisation, politics, religion. One can feel the heavy personal weight this book carries for Kader Abdolah. It was an honour to be taken on this journey once more with him. I will definitely be picking up more of his works to learn more about the refugee experience and history of the Middle East, specifically Iran.
