This one was amazing, definitely my favorite Will Trent and tied for my favorite Karin Slaughter with The Good Daughter. Finally getting Will's story was heartbreaking, and the parts from Amanda & Evelyn's past were gripping

don't get me wrong i really liked finally getting to know Will's backstory but this was all! over! the place!!!! jumping timelines, narrators, etc in a way that was confusing to follow. again super addicted to this series but this installment was just different.

not to mention- half of this was set in the 70s and the constant use of slurs was exhausting and disgusting.

This installation of the Will Trent series had us going back and forth in time to get more context on Amanda and on Will. It was really really good.

The level of tension in the 1970s police force was hard to read at times, not in a bad way, but in a "God, I hate men" way. Sexism and racism was rampant and it was uncomfy to read at times. I still thought this book was outstanding.

I only give 4 stars because there isn't a mystery unwinding in this one, you know who the baddie is and you actually know where the baddie is the entire time. The resolution with the baddie was anticlimactic, but also everything in life doesn't have a big flourish of a finish and that is realistic.. which is something I think all Karin Slaughter novels seem to bring to the table.

Craig and I listened to this during our New Year's trip to North Georgia. 

What a convoluted plot. It felt like the author was just trying to put several twists and turns in the story just to make sure we didn't figure out the ending.

There. Let's see them guess that." I could imagine Karin saying as she decided that the piece of skin (a crucial piece of evidence) should be in the dilapidated ruins of a former orphanage at the bottom of some rickety stairs in a scary and crime infested part of Atlanta.

But despite this over writing, her characters are well thought out and carefully constructed and the plot, the simple plot, is captivating and intriguing. The depiction of Atlanta during the racially turbulent 70s adds much.

I feel like I'm betraying Karin Slaughter by rating this 2 stars.

Criminal is basically the story of how Amanda and Evelyn met and the first case they worked on. We learn the complete story that had already been hinted in the previous books of this series. 

There are two story lines: the past and the present and in both Amanda's trying to solve the same case. Even if we get the full story of how Will got to work at the GBI and learn all about his past we hardly see him. And Faith appears about 5 times. That's all. Most of the book is centred on Amanda and how hard it was being a woman on the police force in the 70's.

As much as I like all the characters in this series Will is still my favourite, his very unconventional character is what makes these books so good. And in this we don't get to see him in action and being his weird self and I got a little bored at times reading. 

Like anything this woman writes, the book is very good. It just didn't do it for me.
