Interesting story, unexpected twists. But for some reason this is my least favorite book of slaughters so far. I wish there was more tying things together like more connection between Andrea’s father and the case or a big twist having to do with her dad. the storyline wasn’t my favorite. The farm is confusing. Maybe I didn’t listen clearly enough

Wow. This book was amazing and it kept me intrigued the entire time. While I was not the biggest fan of the first book in the series, Pieces of Her, this book definitely made up for it. I’m glad that I chose this as my book of the month for August and I recommend it to anyone who is into suspense and crime. Fair warning though without spoiling anything, it can be triggering and heartbreaking.

Enjoyed jumping back in time and returning to the present to solve a 40 year old mystery. Loved It and kept me on my toes!

         I read the first Andrea Oliver book because it was going to be made into a Netflix series, and I try really hard to read the book before I watch whatever non-print format it’s going to take on.  It was thoroughly enjoyable, so I jumped at the second book. 

            The first one began (sorta) Andrea Oliver’s story, including the relationships she has with her mom, adopted father, and the kinda-sorta boyfriend.  This one continued this story, and at this point, she is fully aware of her mother’s secrets.  Andrea agrees to take a job much closer to home than she originally anticipated, one that includes investigating one death while continuing to investigate her own father’s bloody legacy. 

            Dual-storyline novels have become hugely popular, I’m going to blame James Patterson’s Alex Cross series…but the style has probably been around long before Alex started investigating.  I was anticipating not enjoying this book as much as I enjoyed the first one, but I was pleasantly mistaken.  The case Andrea was looking into was fascinating, there were so many players and Slaughter was able to move them around the chessboard like a pro.  It makes me wonder if she has to keep a database of all the characters involved.  I was impressed with this follow-up, and I am looking forward to future works in this series.

This was okaaay. I was definitely interested in the story and was excited to continue on, but I feel like nothing really happened in the first 3/4ths. Not typical KS craziness, felt like any other thriller. I just really don’t care about Andrea Oliver and hope Slaughter leaves this gal behind thankq

           I liked this book WAY MORE than the previous, Pieces of Her. I liked how Andrea grew and I enjoyed her investigation. 

The "clique" of teens was an absolute abhorrent group of teenagers and the plot unfolding stayed interesting the entire time. I will say, I do feel like the rape of Emily was never fully explained? It was alluded to that she may have been drugged and assaulted multiple times "like the girls at the farm", but we never got much explanation there. It's the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars. Otherwise, another fantastic novel by Karin Slaughter.

I found the flash back chapters to be incredibly triggering to me. I thoroughly enjoyed Andrea’s character development between Pieces of Her and this book, I wanted more of her and less of the flashback scenes. I thought it was necessary to read Pieces of Her before this, but now that I’ve finished it, I think you could get away with reading this as a stand-alone. BUT I would highly suggest reading the first book first, I think you’ll appreciate Andy 100% more if you do.

Andrea Oliver, who we met in Pieces of Her, is back but now is a freshly trained US Marshal.  Her uncle is still trying to pull strings, her parents are far from happy over her choice of employment and her complicated romantic life is about to impact her professional life.

Longbill Beach 1982 sees 17 yr old Emily is pregnant and determined to attend her prom.  She is later found murdered - there were suspects but no-one was ever charged.

Fast forward 40 years and it's revealed that the judge Andrea has been ordered to protect is the mother of Emily.  Andrea now has to protect the judge, all whilst carrying on a side investigation into the murder of Emily - one that may just involve her birth father, the currently imprisoned Clayton Morrow AKA Nicholas Harp, who is due for parole soon and she intends to see him rot in prison if he is involved. 

I enjoyed being back in Andrea's world.  I loved Pieces of Me and I really enjoyed getting to meet these new characters, especially Marshal Leonard 'Catfish' Bible, his boss/wife Deputy Chief Cecilia Compton who provide some levity in an otherwise dark thriller. 

We see Emily attempt to investigate her own assault in flashbacks.  Andrea and Catfish also come across a young woman's "suicide" on a fava bean farm owned by one of Emily's friends.  Are these crimes related?

Compulsive, compelling, suspenseful and there is that much-needed vein of humour.
