I wanted to read this before watching the show, and it was slow, and then fast. It was... uneven

This was a good first book for the Will Trent series. Following a very bizarre murder, we follow Detective Michael, Special Agent Will Trent and a few other characters. The events of the past tie in to what is currently happening. There were some really good twists and the thriller aspect was tremendous. It does cover some triggering topics so make sure to check it out before diving in. Such a good book!

Well this was utterly insane! 
I was confused as hell in Part 1, I re-read multiple parts because I really thought I was missing something but once you hit the 25% mark everything starts coming together and this is just a WILD RIDE!! 
Slaughter has a real knack for multifaceted, well developed, believable characters and the plot? compelling, horrific and just amazing!
She truly is the MUTHA of thriller! Can't wait to continue the Will Trent series!

as usual, Karin Slaughter nails it with her unique and captivating stories! i really enjoyed this and felt like it went by very quickly especially considering it's a 5oo page thriller. i'm not 100% obsessed with this Will Trent guy yet but am obviously going to be continuing on and hope he grows on me a bit more lol 

i did have a couple issues with this one; i felt like the pacing of this was off? we were jumping timelines and POVs so much it was hard to keep track of everything going on. and some POVS were waaay more interesting than others. another issue i had was the use of slurs in this book like really miss girl? this book was written in 2006 so i can let  some  out of pocket-ness slide but not that - this book was automatically never going to be 5 stars after that. 

anyways, Karin Slaughter is literally the Queen of Thrillers like WHO is doing it like her? no one. the way everything was so delicately woven together was amazing and as per usual, i can't wait to continue picking up more from her!

Karin Slaughter writes such amazing twisty turny crime novels. This was a ride from the beginning, immediately hooked me in. 

It is definitely more of a procedural crime/thriller, which I don't always enjoy. I do think I'll be continuing on in this series though.

Jumped back and forth in time so much that it totally confused me - so much so that I was unable to remember where the story had left off from one day to the next - and there were many such days since I stuck with it, almost as punishment, until I finally finished. I must say, I am joyous that I am done.

First of all, we're introduced to the new protagonist, Special Agent Will Trent. 

  He was tall, maybe six-four or -five, and whippet-thin. His dirty blond hair was cut tight to his head, parted on the side. His upper lip looked funny, too, like someone had cut it in half and put it back together crooked. As usual, Leo had gotten the show wrong. Put some knobs on either side of his neck and the guy could be on The Munsters.

Long story short, he's Alexander Skarsgard, y'all.


I'm a happy bookworm. 


Will Trent. A dyslexic, single-minded, awkward hell of a detective with a super dark, dark past. What not to love about this fallen-hero man, am I right? So we have a damn messy situation going on.

  It didn't take a Harvard economist to figure out that it'd be a hell of a lot cheaper spending money on helping keep kids safe when they were younger than it was to put them in jail when they were older. That was the American way, though. Spend a million dollars rescuing some kid who's fallen down a well, but God forbid you spend a hundred bucks upfront to cap the well so the kid never falls down it in the first place.



When a hooker found brutally murdered in her own home, Detective Michael Ormewood was right there to take the case. The details of her mutilation were sickening - but there's something more to them, so much more, in fact, that Special Agent Will Trent from GBI was requested to come down from the bureau to consult the case. 

As the truth gradually revealed itself, we got a glimpse into the case from twenty years ago and into the life of a registered pedophile, John Shelley, and the unthinkable thing he did all those years ago. Along the line came the vice cop Angie Polaski (who I've heard to be the b***** with a capital B for the series). She's likable enough in this one (albeit her stance on sexual behavior - she slept around A LOT). 

Ah, a dyslexic cop, a nymphomaniac undercovered vice, and a registered pedophile. What a lovely combination. Only Ms. Slaughter could come up with this messed-up shits, I'm telling you. 

The story progressed slowly at first, but trust me to stick around until the end of Part I. Then you can decide for yourself if you'd want to stick around or not. Why? Because the end of Part I is fucking WILD. 



One thing that I wish Ms. Slaughter did differently was the editing. I wish they edited this book in ways that the bad guy was revealed further along into the book. As we knew that fucker early into the book, it kinda lost the intensity for a bit. 

All in all, this is a great starting point for a new series. I know I'm about 15 years too late to catch this train, but if you just happened to hear about this, I recommend you finish Grant County series first before starting this one. However, it has to be noted that I haven't quite gotten over the ending of that series yet, but the prospects of the new characters captivated me. I think I'm going to like this one even more than GC.

I can't wait to see the day Will finally gets to meet Sara. It's going to be awesome! I'm moving on to the next book now (book 2: Fractured). See you in the next review, folks!

3.5 stars. The start of this book was face paced, addicting and brilliantly put together! The author writes of the same crime from 3 different POVs and does such a good job with it. It was entertaining and kept me wanting more but I felt like the book stalled in the last half. I’m my opinion, the plot twist (and there was a BIG plot twist) happened in the middle of the book, so I had a pretty good idea of what was going to happen then. The rest of the book was just waiting for it to play out. Entertaining definitely and would recommend for a quick read!
