I loved this book. The story was so sad, yet interspersed with much laughter. I like how the chapters were told by the point of view of two different characters. It rounded out the story. I can't recommend this book enough. I can't wait to read more by Grissom.

It's hard to figure out how many stars to give to an incredibly well-written, utterly depressing book. The quality of the narrative won out.

Although the narrative does get off to a rocky start with Lavinia's first-person narration of the events of her childhood, as she grows and matures so does the narrative. At first the tragedies of slavery seem almost cliché-due more to how many books on the subject that I've read than the actual events or narration of them-Grissom does not tell a typical tale. Yes, many of the events contained within the cover of this book happened countless times during both actual and fictional history, Grissom lays them out in heart-breaking fashion.

This is a very well written book. I recommend the book with a small disclaimer. It is not for the weak-stomached or young. Those with maturity should definitely add this book to their reading list.
