Love Song is a 1001 Dark Nights novella from Kylie Scott and ties into her Stage Dive series which focused on the band’s rock and rollin’ members. The story is about a friend of the band, Adam Dillon, and his ex-girlfriend Jill Schwartz who tracks him down a year after the breakup pissed off about an unwanted check received in the mail.

“As beautiful and talented as he might be, it was hard to be unsettled by someone who constantly forgot to put the toilet seat down. It had to be this situation — the concert, the limousine, the security. I’d be fine in a minute. Give me a chance to catch my breath and I’d be… “

The point of 1001 novellas is for new readers to get a taste and return readers to get some extras from a favorite author. I am in the latter group, having read the Stage Dive series and many of Scott’s other novels. For me, Love Song falls short. 

In the other novellas, we were introduced to the characters in the main series, but not in this one. Adam and Jill are completely new characters with their own history that isn’t shown in the four-chapter snapshot. I barely got to like Jill before the whole thing was over, nevermind rooting for Adam. 

There are some fun cameos with other characters from the series like Martha and Mal which I enjoyed. Scott sprinkles more epilogue-esque content for Dave, Jimmie, Ben, and Mal which was honestly what I liked best. 

Love Song isn’t a strong introduction to the Stage Dive series, but it might do enough to entice readers to seek out the main series, which is better. And it’s a so-so bonus for us long time fans.
