This book is the third book in the Wizard of Oz series and was written by Baum for fans who wanted to know what happened to Dorothy and Ozma after the first two books. I loved being able to see more world building as well as Baum's ability to create really weird and interesting characters. For example, Dorothy meets a woman who has a collection of heads she can change whenever she wants. As with the other Oz books, the plot isn't groundbreaking but I'm still enjoying this series for seeing the different people our heroes encounter. I also appreciate that the books continue to be adventure stories centered around and written for girls.

One thing I didn't enjoy as much about this book was the fact that Dorothy felt very different from the one was knew in the first book. The fact that she was drawn differently might have added to that sentiment.

If you've seen the 1985 movie Return to Oz you will no doubt recognise elements of this book. While the Gump and Pumpkin Head were pulled from The Marvelous Land of Oz (the previous Oz book.) Pretty much the rest of the movie was taken from this book.


Ozma of Oz configure the perfectly peculiar style from the first two. As I suspected would be the case, also starts to tie loose ends together from the previous works so it definitely starts feeling like the series is one cohesive whole. Because so much of it was familiar from the movie it's hard for me to evaluate the book on its own merits. This is diffent from other adaptations because it wasn't a diet adaptation, so it's impossible to say "Movie did X better while book did Y better." and unlike WWoO the story isn't an institution.

Ultimately it was an enjoyable entry.

Its been enjoyable listening to the Oz books with my children through Librivox. 

Ozma of Oz is the story of Dorothy who is en route with her Uncle to Australia who gets tossed out of the boat and finds herself in fairy land with her companion Billina the chicken. Once in fairy land she meets Tick-Tock and a group of familiar adventurers from Oz and together they go and try to rescue the Queen of Ev and her children from the wicked Gnome King.

The first thing we noticed about this particular book was that Dorothy's drastic personality change. We experienced some personality changes with Scarecrow and Nick Chopper in the last book, but the changes in Dorothy seemed a bit extreme - particularly with her accent. It was also hard to see some of our favorite characters have to take the back burner, and at times I thought it might be easier to not have them in the book all together. We really enjoyed the character of the Gnome King, despite his evil ways. 

The story did drag in a few places, but overall the storyline kept our interest. We have already started the next book in the series:
