Larry Brown makes us stare in the face of the bleakness and horrors of these character's lives but he does so with extreme empathy and care -- there is still hope for these people, but not in the way you would expect. 

It's rare for me nowadays to be blown away by a short story collection and feel compelled to finish it in one day but every sentence, every page, every story made me want to keep reading until the end. I will definitely be reading more of Brown's work after this.
