I honestly don’t know what to rate this book and I don’t think I will tbh

I was enjoying mostly of the book but god there were some things that just missed… first, I was tired of Pae and Kai’s constant “we can’t do this”, “this is wrong, I’m marrying your brother”, but then they kept doing it, like just own what you’re doing. Then, the goddamn plot twists weren’t plot twists AT ALL!! She literally gave us everything beforehand! In the king’s povs I figure it out that Paedyn was 100% Kitt’s sister in some capacity, I figured that Kitt had some illness and was going to die. She just made it so obvious through her writing. And then GOD this irritated me, how everyone just figured out everything by themselves, Calum said nothing and Paedyn was like yeah, I’m the former queen’s daughter. She’s a psychic after all. 

anyway, I think the ending was so rushed, she could have spread some of those “plot twists” through the book.

and I feel like she might be writing a novel about Blair and Lenny and I simply do not care

I was enjoying mostly of the book but god there were some things that just missed… first, I was tired of Pae and Kai’s constant “we can’t do this”, “this is wrong, I’m marrying your brother”, but then they kept doing it, like just own what you’re doing. Then, the goddamn plot twists weren’t plot twists AT ALL!! She literally gave us everything beforehand! this deeply pains me as I am an avid powerless lover. you don’t know me if in your head my name isn’t connected to this series. now, I’m about to get deep into why I didn’t love this book, so if you haven’t read this and want, please for the love of everything good in the world: don’t. now we will start with the good because some parts of this book (aka 2% of it) was worthwhile.

the paekai for the first maybe 10? chapters were good. I found myself smiling, giggling and enjoying them. I also loved all the adena mentions, my girl, still so sad about that. the third trail was thought out, and had some depth to it and it was exciting. I had an audible reaction and after being bored the first half, I thought maybe I’m getting something. now here I am, severely disappointed. and lastly pae met mak! WHOOP (not.) 

okay now the bad, first off, the pacing of the writing was a drag. I would take hour long breaks because I just genuinely didn’t want to continue. book one and two I finished in five hours; this one took me SEVENTEEN. the beginning was slow and then the end was shoved into ten chapters, I didn’t know what the hell was happening. 

then we have the plot twist, POINTLESS. half siblings? pae being kitts half sister and shocker: THEY STILL MARRY. kai not related to kitt? hell if that plot twist wasn’t handed to me on a platter, I may have been shocked. but I wasn’t. lauren roberts spoon fed this twist to me like it was desert. and that was once again dropped into paedyns lap, and in that same chapter she confronts the culprit and then in the next chapter the culprits dead. twist after twist with NOTHING in between like space that shit out please!

now paekai, I love them dearly but jesus christ. the repetition was consistent whether it be from previous books or from five chapters ago. we get the sneaking around but paedyn annoyed me sometimes. one minute she’s all ‘no kai we can’t do this’ next she’s kissing him. even they felt like a bore to me towards the end. I got their endgame, what I’ve been wanting since powerless, and you know what happened in the end?? I didn’t CARE. at this point I just wanted it over. 

also, kitt: crazy. I get it paedyn killed your father and you wanted all this revenge but dragging every single person into your damn revenge scheme to be better than your father? edric was insane and horrible, but he owned it. kitt tried to be the loved prince he once was, but in the end, he wasn’t better than his father. he was worse.

the trails paeydn had to endure (1&2 ew 3 was okay) BORING once again over in one chapter, and you’re telling me pae ‘defeated’ a mutated fucking eel with a puny spear? don’t even. these trials were stupid, and they could have been great.

micro tropes. nightmare scene check. cute I actually didn’t mind this. confessing love while dunk and one person doesn’t remember. CHECK. boring because we didn’t hear it, it was implied. someone getting drugged CHECK TWICE. one time was enough I didn’t need another. let’s try kill the future queen CHECK TWICE again one was enough. we get it you hate her she’s ordinary COOL once again unnecessary. 

now, killing mak off. he was 100% created just to be killed and that drives me insane. I once made a TikTok comment, and I quote ‘OMG WHAT IF MAK DIES TO SAVE PAE.’ like miss roberts I WAS KIDDING. saddest death ever.

kitts death, I feel bad, but I didn’t care. he died and I kept reading. to be honest that whole chapter was on crack and so, so confusing.

ending was meh, I got my happy ending but at the end of the day it didn’t matter, because the rest of the book was bad. I wanted to dnf it at 21% then 36% then 48% then 68%. so really this was just boring, and I’m so devastated about it. 

I feel like lauren wanted to publish this as soon as possible, when she should have waited a few more months to ensure everything flowed at a pace that wasn’t rushed nor too slow. and please find another saying then “you are my ruin.” its plainly quite old. 

all in all, this book was never written and powerless is a duet!!
